Make an infinity galaxy using the TapeBlock Method with two parallel strips of conductive tape around a ring with holes and insert LEDs

Material

  • 3D printed ring
  • Conductive tape
  • Light emitting diodes (LEDs)
  • Scissors
  • Buck converter
  • Two round mirrors
  • Glue

Instruction

  • Wrap the Conductive Tape: Wrap a layer of conductive tape all the way around one edge of the ring on the flat side. Avoid covering the holes as you wrap the tape around. Make sure you go all the way around the ring. When you've completed the wrap, cut the tape. Always cut the silver part of the tape, not the white part, to make it easy to restart. Wrap a second layer of conductive tape all the way around the bottom edge of the ring, again avoiding the holes. Create a small flap of conductive tape by folding it back on itself, then continue wrapping the tape further around the ring. Do this on both rings and cut the silver part of the tape, not the white.
  • Prepare the LEDs: Find the long leg on an LED and put a small bend in the short leg. Split the legs of the LED and place the head of the LED through the hole in the ring with the bent leg down. Tape the legs down, making sure the tape is only on either the upper or lower row of tape, not covering both. Continue to place the LEDs through the holes in the ring, ensuring the short leg is facing down and the long leg is facing up so that all your LEDs are in the same direction.
  • Attach the Buck Converter: Attach the buck converter to the flap made with the conductive tape. The red clip attaches to the top flap and the black clip attaches to the lower flap. Each of the LEDs will light up as it is placed in the hole and attached to the two pieces of tape (top and bottom).
  • Attach the Mirrors: Take the two round mirrors and peel the cover off one of them. Place glue on the edge of the ring and stick the round mirror to the ring. Repeat this with the other mirror: peel the protective layer off the ring, place glue on the ring, stick the mirror to the ring, and peel the other protective layer off.
  • Final Steps: Once the glue is dry, you can hang the infinity ring by the cables.

Problem

  • First check that you have power to you cable
  • Check that the upper and lower conductive tape are not touching
  • Check that all of the LED are the correct directions. With the long le p and the short leg down.
